Quick Recap: Split Squad Losses

MLB: Spring Training-Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Two games. Neither went well.

Orioles 4 Blue Jays 3

The game that wasn’t on TV. Our batters had trouble with Alex Cobb for 4 innings, but then got 3 runs off him in the 5th. That would be all we’d get.

Sam Gaviglio was good, once again. He allowed just 1 hit in the first 3 innings, but had some troubles in the 4th inning. In the 4th, he gave up a leadoff walk, got a fly out, gave up an RBI double and got a ground out. And that was his day. Brad Wilson allowed the inherited runner to score so Sam’s line was 3.2 innings, 2 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. His spring ERA is now 1.29.

Other pitchers:

  • Brad Wilson: Gave up a double and got a ground out finishing the 4th.
  • Elvis Luciano: 1 hit, 1 earned, 2 walks, 1 k, getting just 1 out. 10.80 ERA. I thought he was pretty sure to make the roster but he’s had a few bad outings in a row.
  • Danny Barnes: Came in and got the last 2 outs for Elvis and then pitched the 6th. 1.2 innings, 3 k. 1.35.
  • David Paulino: 1 inning, 1 hit. 6.74.
  • Javy Guerra: 2 innings, 2 hits, 1earned, 1 home run, 1 walk, 1 k. 1.50.

Batters starting lineup:

  • Dalton Pompey: 1 for 4, k. .233.
  • Freddy Galvis: 0 for 2, k. .233.
  • Brandon Drury: 0 for 2, 2 k. .324.
  • Billy McKinney: 0 for 2. 1 k. 250.
  • Andy Burns: 0 for 4, k. .308.
  • Rowdy Tellez: 0 for 2, 2 k. .286.
  • Jonathan Davis: 1 for 2. .219.
  • Cavan Biggio: 1 for 2, walk. .219.
  • Reese McGuire: 1 for 3, double. .158.

Replacements:

  • Yeltsin Gudino: 1 for 2, k. .500. He also made an error at short.
  • Gunnar Heidt: 0 for 1, walk. .000.
  • Chavez Young: 0 for 2, k. .333.
  • Kacy Clemens: 0 for 2, k. .000.
  • Roemon Fields: 0 for 2, k. .118.
  • Andrew Guillote: 1 for 1, .444.

Blue Jays 7 Yankees 17

So this one wasn’t fun. The Yankees hit 6 home runs (seemed like more).

Thomas Pannone had a really rough time. 1.2 innings, 6 hits, 6 earned, 1 walk, 2 k, 3 home runs. 12.96 ERA on the spring.

  • Joe Biagini: 1.1, 1 hit, 2 k. 0.00. Joe is having a very nice spring.
  • Justin Shafer: 1.0, 2 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk, 2 k, 1 home run. 3.38.
  • Tim Mayza: 1.0, 1 earned, 1 walk. He pitched a quick 5th inning. Then gave up a walk to start the 6th and that runner scored. 1.50.
  • Cory Copping: 1 inning, 4 hits, 3 earned, 1 k. 12.27.
  • Shawn Morimando: 1 inning, 6 hits, 5 earned, 2 k, 2 home run. 13.50.
  • Ty Tice: 1 inning, 2 k. After that I think he should get a roster spot just for having a clean inning in that mess.

Batters starting lineup:

  • Bo Bichette: 2 for 2, walk, double, steal. .441. Having a terrific spring.
  • Anthony Alford: 0 for 3, 2 k. .258. After the 3 homers in 2 games, he’s had a rough time of it.
  • Teoscar Hernandez: 0 for 3. .394. He’s coming back to earth after hitting over .500 for the first couple of weeks of camp.
  • Justin Smoak: 1 for 3, homer, k. .346.
  • Kevin Pillar: 1 for 3. .222.
  • Kendrys Morales: 1 for 3, homer, k. .276.
  • Danny Jansen: 1 for 3, triple, .258.
  • Eric Sogard: 0 for 2, k. .226. Threw a ball from third deep into the first base stands for an error.
  • Richard Urena: 1 for 2, home run, k. .286.

Replacements:

  • Luis De Los Santos: 0 for 2, k.
  • Ryan Noda: 1 for 2. Double.
  • Rodrigo Orosco: 1 for 1.
  • Christian Willaims: Walk.
  • Joshua Palacios: Walk.
  • Jake Brodt: 0 for 1, k.
  • Brandon Grudzielanek: 0 for 2, 2 k.
  • Otto Lopez: 1 for 2.

The Jays are now 9-11-2. Tomorrow the Jays play the Twins and it is on Sportsnet.
