I guess a sweep was too much to ask. Perhaps a win tomorrow to get us a series win?
Trent Thornton didn’t get off to a good start tonight. In the first inning he gave up a double, 2 singles and a walk, but only 2 runs. It took him 37 pitches to get out of the inning and we were expecting a very short night from him.
He did better after that, ending up with 6 hits, 4 earned (one scoring after he left the game), 3 walks and 3 strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
On offense, we scored in the first inning, for a change. Freddy Galvis hit a 1-out single, moved up to second on a fly ball to left and scored on a Justin Smoak single.
After that we wouldn’t do all that much. We ended up with 8 hits (all singles) and 1 walks (but only 10 strikeouts tonight). Galvis was the only Jay with 2 hits. Rowdy Tellez (0 for 4, 2 k) and Luke Maile (0 for 3, 1 k) were the only Jays with no hits. Tellez is going to have to get hitting soon. I would like him to get 400 at bats, but he’s hitting .186 and he won’t get 400 at bats like that.
Elvis Luciano finished the 5th inning, allowing the inherited run to score, but he pitched a nice 6th inning, getting two strikeouts. In all 1.1, a single and a walk. That’s the best I’ve seen him pitch. Nice fastball, in the 93-94 mph range and a very nice changeup and a slider. I wasn’t happy when he came into a close game, but he looked good.
Javy Guerra pitched the 7th and 8th. in the 7th gave up a leadoff single, and then got an out on a hard hit line drive, but got a nice double play to end the inning. He had a nice 8th, giving up just a soft hit grounder that went off his glove.
No Jays of the Day today. The high mark was Eric Sogard with a .042 WPA.
Suckage: Thornton had the number (-.108) not a terrible start but when we only get one run, he wasn’t good enough, and Billy McKinney (-.097, 1 for 3).
Tomorrow is the final game of this four game series. It is a 1:00 Eastern start (presuming no rain). A win would be nice, I’d like a series win before the season ends.
