A roster shakeup was inevitable after the Blue Jays’ recent stretch of terribleness. Here it is in bulleted form for easy comprehension:
- SP/RP Thomas Pannone was optioned down yesterday, but he has been recalled as Clay Buchholz is headed to the IL with right shoulder inflammation - a tough hit to an already depleted rotation
- RP Javy Guerra’s contract has been selected (again), to backfill Thomas Pannone’s spot from yesterday. He had a 5.40 ERA (3.53 FIP) in 10 innings pitched with the Jays earlier this season
- To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Socrates Brito has been DFA’d. He had 3 hits (seems like more than I recall) and struck out 17 times in 43 plate appearances with the Jays. He is currently worth -0.7 bWAR this season. Should the Jays place him on waivers, I am confident he will clear.
- OF Jonathan “JD” Davis (Anthony Alford’s brother-in-law) has been recalled from AAA, and he gets Brito’s 25-man spot. He had 5 hits in 25 at bats as a September call up last year, and he’s currently hitting 306/.493/.633 (1.125 OPS) with 4 homers in 16 games in Buffalo. He has 16 walks to 13 strikeouts. He can play center field, and will apparently do so tonight. A well deserved call up.
I hope Jonathan Davis will get a fair share of MLB playing time. It’s a good opportunity to see what he can do.
Apparently Vlad Jr will be moved up to the number 2 slot tonight - something many of us here have been advocating for.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., will bat second tonight, because he’s had good ABs without reward, to give him some protection with Justin Smoak behind him, and to show some confidence in him. Dave Hudgens was with #Astros when they did the same thing when Alex Bregman first came up
