First the rant.
They have to get rid of the stupid scoreboard pieces in the outfield fence. There are way too many injuries with outfielders running into them. They don’t give like the rest of the fence. And, since there is no real warning track (grass fields have dirt warning tracks so the players can feel when they are close to the wall). Tonight it was Teoscar Hernandez who hit the scoreboard and has a sprained wrist. We have too many little nagging injuries at the moment.
This one was over early. Derek Law, as opener, had a scoreless first inning. Edwin Jackson started the second and was Edwin Jackson. He gave up 6 hits, 7 earned, 2 walks, all while getting just 2 outs. I would have left him in, no reason to pull him at that point, it was two late.
Our bullpen was fine, considering the number of innings they pitched:
- Sam Gaviglio went 3.1 allowed 4 hits and 2 earned.
- Nick Kingham gave up a Mike Trout homer in his inning.
- David Phelps pitched for the first time since August 2017, 1 scoreless inning. He was pretty emotional coming off the field.
- Tim Mayza pitched 1 scoreless.
- Daniel Hudson gave up 2 walks in the 9th but got out of the inning without a run.
Offensively it was Cavan Biggio’s night. He hit 2 home runs. I’m enjoying watching him. He did let a catchable ball go over his head in left, but everything hit off Jackson was hit hard.
Randal Grichuk also homered. All our runs came on home runs.
We had 8 hits. Two each from Sogard, Biggio, Grichuk and Galvis.
Vlad had an 0 for 4. I’m wondering if his hand is hurting. but we had a number of 0 fors tonight.
Randal had a nice defensive play in the ninth. A soft line single landed in front of him. He threw to second getting a force out on the runner from first. A 8-6 force out. Randal moved over to center when Teoscar came out of the game.
Jay of the Day: Cavan (.133 WPA).
Suckage: Jackson (-.526). I think we will be naming the award after him.
We had 476 comments in the GameThread. Minor Leaguer called me handsome. Publius Varrus led us to defeat.
