The Blue Jays have placed first baseman Justin Smoak on the 10-day injured list with a quadriceps injury. According to an initial report from Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, reliever Justin Shafer has been recalled to take Smoak’s place on the active roster.

It turns out that starting pitcher Edwin Jackson, who is suffering a back issue (sure, we’ll believe that), was also placed on the 10-day IL. Shafer officially replaces Jackson’s roster spot. Meanwhile, outfielder Billy McKinney was also recalled to Toronto to take Smoak’s spot. According to Shi Davidi, that assignment of replacements allows Smoak’s IL stint to be backdated to June 15 (since Shafer was only sent down yesterday).
Other than a handful of day-to-day issues, Smoak had generally been healthy for the Blue Jays since he was picked up on waivers from the Mariners in 2014. The last time he was on the IL (then the 15-day disabled list) was in June 2014, also with a quadriceps injury.
Shafer was just optioned to triple-A Buffalo yesterday and with an offday, did not even dress for the Bisons before he turned around and headed back up the QEW.
Jacob Waguespack is a possible starter for this Saturday’s game, according to Nicholson-Smith.

If he can’t start Saturday, Waguespack would be one option for #BlueJays. They prefer to keep Gaviglio in bullpen. Kingham not considered an option for Sat
