This one was over early. Trent Thornton gave up 4 runs in the first, 1 run in the second and 2 more in the third before being pulled.
In all, 2.2 innings, 11 hits allowed, 7 earned, 1 walk, 1 strikeout and 1 Rafael Devers home run. He wasn’t fooling anyone today.
Sean Reid-Foley, who was listed as tomorrow’s starter, came in and did a great job for 3.1 innings, not allowing a base runner and getting 4 strikeouts. It is too bad he’s not getting tomorrow’s start. It’s entirely possible that he’ll be shipped out to make room for, likely, Jacob Waguespack, who might get the start instead, since Jake was to start in Buffalo tomorrow. I didn’t understand pulling Sean out of the game after the 3.1, since he was pitching well and he won’t be able to pitch tomorrow anyway.
Derek Law came in and gave up a home run Christian Vazquez that I’m sure is still flying.
Joe Biagini pitched the eighth and gave up a 2-run homer, Dever’s second of the game.
Ken Giles pitched a quick ninth.
Offensively, we didn’t do much. David Price went 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 earned, 4 walks and 7 strikeouts.
We scored 1 in the second inning. Cavan Biggio doubled, Brandon Drury walked and Danny Jansen had an RBI double. Eric Sogard walked to load the bases, and we had our best/only chance to get back into the game, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit fly ball to center field to end the inning.
We scored again in the sixth. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. walked (!) and Randal Grichuk and Freddy Galvis each singled to send him around the bases.
And Danny Jansen homered in the eighth.
We got two more in the ninth. Jansen single, Sogard walked and Vlad doubled them home. I was sure it was a home run off the bat, but it hit the wall in left. Vlad moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Gurriel sac fly.
We only had 8 hits. Jansen had 3 hits, homer, double and single. Biggio had 2. Vlad had a double in the ninth and 2 walks.
Jays of the Day: Let’s give one each to Jansen (homer, double and single) and Reid-Foley (3.1 perfect innings).
Suckage: Thornton (-.418 WPA).
We had 407 comments in the GameThread. I led us to crushing defeat. I slowed up some when I finally got my pizza.
