The trades will be coming hot and heavy for the next day.
The Blue Jays have traded David Phelps to the Cubs for RHP Thomas Hatch. Or so Shi Davidi tells us (a Cubs writer has it too).
Hatch is a 24 year pitching in Double A Tennessee. He has a 4.59 ERA in 21 starts. In 100 innings he’s allowed 104 hits, 13 homers, 37 walks and 93 strikeouts. Hatch has been a little better in July, 2.57 ERA in 5 starts.
Hatch was the Cubs first pick in the 2016 draft, but then there first pick was in the 3rd round, losing their first two picks for signing Jason Heyward and John Lackey.
Baseball America has Hatch was the Cubs #22 prospect before the season.
He throws 93-94 with his 4-seam fastball, and low 90s on the 2-seam and he has a slider. His problem has been control, averaging 3.6 walks per 9 innings in the minors (8.2 k/9). He looks to be a back end rotation type.
I traded for him in OOTP 20.
Phelps has a $1,000,000 team option for next year. Phelps has a 3.63 ERA in 17.1 innings since coming of the IL. He missed all of last season and the first couple of months of this season after Tommy John surgery.
I don’t mind this trade at all.
I’m thinking the Jays may use Phelps roster spot for Sean Reid-Foley, who is to start tonight’s game.
I got this from Al Yellon of Bleed Cubbie Blue:
Tom Hatch was a 3rd-round pick in 2016. Currently 24 (25 in September) and repeating Double-A, where his numbers are not as good as last year's. Has been a starter, maybe he'd be better in relief. Seems a reasonable return for a 32 y-o reliever coming off TJS
