Who would you call up September first?

I thought we could talk about who we’d like to see called up in September. It looks like this will be the last year we can bring up a bunch of guys for September. I hate that they are changing this. I like that we get to see a bunch of young guys for a month.

Catchers:

I think most teams like to have a third catcher for September. If Luke Maile can play, he would be the guy, but they haven’t said much about his condition, so I’m guessing Beau Taylor will be coming up.

Infielders:

The only infielder on the 40-man who isn’t on our roster is Richard Urena. He was sent down on the 24th so he can’t come back up on the 1st, but he’ll be up soon after that.

The club announced that Devon Travis won’t be back this year, not that anyone thought he would be.

Outfielders:

Lourdes Gurriel is still on the IL, I don’t know when he’s likely to be back.

Anthony Alford better be coming up. I’m not sure if they will wait until the Bisons’ season is over or not but I’d like to see him come and get at bats. Teoscar isn’t hitting at the moment, why not give Alford a shot.

Jonathan Davis is also on the 40-man. He’s been making highlight catches almost daily. Back when teams didn’t carry 8-10 relievers, teams had room for a fifth outfielder. Davis would be a good choice for that role. But, we don’t have room for that. He can play all three outfield spots and would be a great defensive replacement/pinch runner.

Hitters not on the 40-man

The front office seems to like Santiago Espinal. He isn’t on the 40-man, but he could be useful as a utility infielder.

Socrates Brito was hitting well in Buffalo, but when the calendar turned to August, he stopped hitting. I don’t see them wanting to open a 40-man spot for him.

Pitchers on the 40-man:

Elvis Luciano will suddenly become healthy within a few days of September 1. Ryan Tepera will be activated soon after the first.

Clayton Richard? If they don’t think he’ll able to pitch, he could go on the 60-day.

Julian Merryweather has made a couple of rehab starts. Maybe he could go into our bullpen in a week or two?

Yennsy Diaz has been excellent in August, 2.55 ERA in New Hampshire. But he hasn’t been moved up to Buffalo.

Patrick Murphy has missed some time with shoulder fatigue, I can’t see him coming up. I could see him going the AFL.

Thomas Pannone will be up.

Hector Perez has had a rough August5.25 ERA. I don’t think he’ll be up.

Sean Reid-Foley? I’d think he’ll be back up. I’m not sure it will be as a starter.

Justin Shafer will be up I’m sure.

Brock Stewart will be up.

Pitchers not on the 40-man

Nate Pearson, as much as I would like it, I can’t see it happening.

Anthony Kay. I really would like them to bring him up. Since he’ll be going onto the 40-man this winter, you might as well add him now.

Ty Tice has been so good as Buffalo’s closer, it would be nice to see what he could do with the Blue Jays. But do they want to open a 40-man spot for him?

T.J. Zeuch. He has been great in August. I think he’s more likely to see time in the AFL. But he could compete for a spot in the rotation next spring.

Zach Jackson. He’s had a rough August. I can’t see them opening a roster spot for him.

Travis Bergen. Another lefty would be handy, but I’m not sure it would be worth making room on the 40-man for it. They will have to decide if they want him on the 40-man this winter.

Jackson McClelland. I would love to see him with the Jays. Unfortunately, he’s still up around a walk an inning.
