The Blue Jays have claimed Zack Godley off waivers from the Diamondbacks.
Zack is a right-handed pitcher. He had a very good season in 2017, with a 3.37 ERA, in 26 games, 25 starts. In 155 innings he allowed 124 hits, 53 walks and 165 strikeouts. Since then he hasn’t been as good. This year he has a 6.39 ERA in 27 games, 9 starts. In 76 innings, he’s allowed 81 hits, 35 walks with 58 strikeouts.
What’s different? Well, FanGraphs shows he’s lost some off his fastball. In 2017 he averaged 90.0 MPH on his cut fastball, this year, 88.6 with a similar change in his slider.
To make room on the 40-man, the team has DFAed David Paulino. That one surprised me. Paulino came over from Houston in the Roberto Osuna trade, along with Ken Giles. Paulino has been injured most of this season. He’s made 7 starts in Buffalo and has a 3.45 ERA there. In 28.3 innings he’s allowed 30 hits, 2 homers, 11 walks and 27 strikeouts. I really figured we would see him sooner or later this season. I guess the team figures no one will grab him off waivers with the injury troubles he’s had.
