Since we are deep in next year territory, I thought I’d ask who you think will be next year’s center fielder?
We’ve had 7 players play some center field:
Teoscar Hernandez: 569 innings
Randal Grichuk: 473 innings
Jonathan Davis: 154 innings
Kevin Pillar: 39 innings
Socrates Brito: 28 innings
Derek Fisher: 25 innings
Anthony Alford: 9 innings
So those guys, minus Pillar, are the obvious suspects. I’d hope that Fisher’s chances being the regular CFer next year are roughly the same has mine. I hear Buck and Pat talking up Lourdes Gurriel for center field. Sometimes, when they say things like this, I think they heard something from the coaches or the front office and sometimes I think they are making it up. In this case I think the latter.
Personally, I’d love them to give Alford the job and give him 400 at bats to prove he deserves the job, but I’m thinking they don’t want to give him 30 at bats because they are worried he might do well.
Teoscar seems about average on defense in center. I think a little more confidence, maybe a little more urgency, and he could be better than average.
Grichuk is well less than average in center. He seems to catch the balls he gets to, he just doesn’t get to enough.
Davis is fast, has great range, we haven’t seen enough of him to say more. I don’t think he’ll hit well enough to keep a full time job.
Brito? Well he was the Bisons MVP, which might be his ceiling. I think there is a non-zero chance he has a great spring and the team thinks ‘why not’. But a pretty close to non-zero.

Speaking of Lourdes:
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ran the bases today and felt good. Possible he returns and plays tomorrow. Montoyo would like to ease him in with some DH reps first. #BlueJays

15 games left, he has a shot and becoming number 1.
Cavan Biggio's 63 walks this season are the 2nd-most in a rookie season in #LetsGoBlueJays history (Eric Hinske 77 in 2002).
