Yesterday the Blue Jays claimed Ryan Dull off waivers from the Yankees. Today the DFAed him (and right after I got my Dull jersey) and claimed Breyvic Valera off waivers from the Yankees.
Valera is an infielder. I guess the idea is to pick up another infielder after Bo Bichette’s injury. Valera’s biggest claim to fame is that he was part of haul that the Orioles got for Manny Machado from the Dodgers back at the trade deadline in 2018.
Valera, a switch hitter, has played 49 MLB games, split between the Cardinals, Dodgers, Orioles and Yankees. He has a .217/.298/.264 batting line.
He spent most of this season in AAA split between the Giants and Yankees’ AAA teams. In 107 games he hit .303/.389/.480 with 14 home runs and 10 steals.
I’m thinking I won’t really need to learn to spell his name.
So we don’t need Adam Lind’s mom, we have Justin Smoak:
Among those to notice Bichette was off after taking a ball off the batting helmet Thursday in Baltiore was Justin Smoak, who urged him to come out. "He looked a little dazed. I told him there are things you can be a tough guy on but not this one." #Bluejays

I don’t want to complain about the training staff, but shouldn’t they have noticed this?? I would have thought that if a player gets hit by pitch in the head, the training staff should be watching him carefully.
And, the big news, Anthony Alford gets a start. He’s playing left field (I’d rather him in center) and he’s hitting leadoff. And Richard Urena also get a start, playing short and hitting 9th.
No Bo, no surprise - we’ll get a medical update later. Alford leads off, in left. #BlueJays pic.twitter.com/TssJUx1uEL
