This is the game from August 19. The second of two against St. Louis.

Cardinals 4 Blue Jays 3

There are games you should win, that you lose. This is one of those.

Adam Wainwright pitched 6.2 innings, allowing 12 hits, 2 walks, with 2 home runs. If you get 14 base runners, including 2 home runs, in 6.2 innings, you have to be thinking you’d get 5-6 runs at worst. But no, we only scored 3 runs. And then three Cardinal relievers pitched 2.1 hitless innings.

We had 2 hits each from Rowdy Tellez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Lourdes Gurriel, Travis Shaw and Reese McGuire.

Shaw’s two hits were both home runs, and he walked twice. He drove in all 3 Jays runs. Shaw is now up to 33 home runs.

We had base runners in each of the first 7 innings.

  • We had 3 hits, in the second inning, including a home run, but the two singles came after the solo home run and the singles didn’t come around to score.
  • We had 4 hits, in the fourth inning, again including a home run, but only 2 runs scored.
  • In both the fifth and the seven there was a hit and a walk, but no runs.

On the pitching side, Hyun-Jin Ryu went 7 innings, allowed 3 singles and a walk and an unearned run. The run scored because of a Vlad error at third. That was Vlad’s 14th error of the season. Sim Charlie really should have moved Vlad over to first or DH. Travis Shaw, and his 33 home runs, could do a much better job at third.

Sam Coonrod started the eighth. He gave up a single and a got a strikeout and then left the game with an injury. No word yet on what the injury is.

Rafael Dolis came in and gave up a walk, single and double, to score 3 runs and put the Jays down 4-3, while just getting one out. He got the loss (now 2-8, and his 4th blown save).

Eduardo Jimenez and Anthony Bass split the last four outs of the game.

The Jays are now 70-56. The Jays are on their way to New York for a four game series against the Yankees. Tanner Roark (1-5, 5.15 in 23 starts) starts the first game. Jonathan Loaisiga (9-4, 3.72 in 25 starts) goes for the Yankees.

Let’s check the stats for Dunedin.

Their star hitter is Griffin Conine.

On the pitching side Elvis Luciano is doing well, but look at the 17 hit batters. Simeon Woods Richardson is having a good season too. Josh Winchkowski is on the IL. He has a 4.55 ERA in 24 starts.
