Jays sign Jake Petricka

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays Kevin Sousa-USA TODAY Sports

Robert Murray tells us that the Blue Jays have signed right-handed reliever Jake Petricka, to a minor league contract, with a spring invite. He’s 31.

You might remember that Petricka pitched for us in 2018, pitching in 41 games, with a 4.53 ERA. Batters hit .317/.386/.511 against him that year. He was coming off nerve transposition surgery that season

Career he has been in the majors for 7 seasons, has a 3.96 ERA in 228 games all in relief. Career batters have hit .286/.359/.411 against him. He throw hard. He’s averaged 95.8 MPH on his fastball in his career. He mostly throws a sinker, a change and a slider.

A second round draft pick in 2010, he was a pretty good prospect, but had some trouble with the strike zone early in his career. He’s never had the strikeout number one would have expected him to get (17.2% strikeout rate career).

There are a few open spots in the bullpen, so he’ll get a good look this spring.
