Bob Nightengale tells us that MLB is considering another plan to get the season started. Having the team play from their spring training sites, which would mean a huge realignment. There are 15 teams that play in Florida and 15 in Arizona.
This is how it would look:
GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE
- NORTH: New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates.
- SOUTH: Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles.
- EAST: Washington Nationals, Houston Astros, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins.
CACTUS LEAGUE
- NORTHEAST: Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics.
- WEST: Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels.
- NORTHWEST: Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals.
All teams would play with the DH.
The plan includes three weeks of ‘spring training’ before a condensed season starts..
And:
Baseball, even with the realignment, could still play 12 games apiece against their new divisional opponents and six games apiece against the other teams in the state. There would be at least one doubleheader a night when all teams are scheduled to play because of the odd number of teams in each state.
I really don’t see this working but I do understand that MLB really really wants to get the season in. They like money.
And I’d like baseball to start as well. My question continues to be will people want to leave their families during a epidemic? Players get paid a lot, so they have incentive to come to play games. Coaches? They aren’t paid as much. Would they want to leave family? Broadcasters? Support staff?
Florida has 16,323 known cases. I’m not sure I’d want to be there if it were up to me.
Arizona has 3,018 known cases.
It is hard. I understand baseball wants to get going. I want it to get going. It is a thought. They are willing to try anything.
