There is a little bit of news, down in Buffalo. Ryan Borucki came out of his second start of the season with an injury. No word yet on what it is or how long he might be out. Tomorrow is an off-day for the Blue Jays so we’ll post minor league stats.
Twins 7 Blue Jays 6 (12 innings)
It is Jackie Robinson Day, that’s why the Jays in the picture are both wearing 42.
Two losses in a row for the Jays. Losing 2 of 3 against the Twins isn’t what I expected from this series.
Chase Anderson had his second bad start of of the season (after moving from the bullpen to the rotation). Today he went 4.1 innings, allowed, 6 hits, 5 earned, no walks, 3 strikeouts. He gave up 3 home runs and pushed his ERA to 9.26.
The Twin got 3 runs in the first. Ehire Adrianza singled and then Nelson Cruz and Miguel Sano went back to back.
We got 1 back in the second. Travis Shaw homered to start off the inning. We should have scored more. Lourdes Gurriel followed the homer with a double. Danny Jansen singled and Cavan Biggio walks (a 13-pitch at bat where Cavan fouled off 7 pitches). That loaded bases with 1-out. But Bo Bichette ground one back to the pitcher for a force at the plate and Teoscar Hernandez struck out.
Anderson gave up another run in the fourth, a Miguel Sano home run.
And one more in the sixth. He hit Byron Buxton with a pitch. Buxton stole second and scored on a Adrianza single. That ended Anderson’s day, with the Jays down 5-1.
We got 3 back in the fifth. Biggio started it off with a 4-pitch walk. An out later, Hernandez walked. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled (109 mph off the bat) home Cavan. Hernandez scores on a Randal Grichuk ground out. And Vlad scores on a Shaw single. 5-4 Twins.
A Derek Fisher home run (number 4 on the season) tied the game.
That ended the scoring until the top of the 12th. Wilmer Font came in to start the inning. He gave up a Adrianza walk. Got Nelson Cruz on a fly out. Adrianza stole second. Sano struck out. Max Kepler singled home Adrianza. Anthony Bass came in to get the last out of the inning.
We got a base runner in the bottom of the inning (Derek Fisher singled) but he was stranded at first base.
Jays emptied the bullpen:
- Jordan Romano pitched 2.0, with just 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
- Brian Moran got 1 out, giving up 2 hits and an earned run, with 1 k.
- Rafael Dolis: 1.2 allowed just a walk with a k.
- Ken Giles: 1.2, gave up 2 hits and had 5 strikeouts.
- Shun Yamaguchi: 1 inning, 3 strikeouts.
- Font: 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 earned, 1 walk, 1 k. He took the loss.
- Bass 1 out.
On offense we got 11 hits and 6 walks. Hernandez, Vlad, Shaw, and Fisher had 2 hits each. Fisher and Shaw (9th) each homered.
Let’s give JoDs to Dolis, Giles and Yamaguchi in the pen. And Fisher and Shaw.
Suckage: Anderson and Grichuk (0 for 5, leaving 5 on base).
22,536 at Rogers Centre. The game was 4:58, a long time to be sitting in a closed dome. If you are going to play that long, you might as well win.
The Jays have an off-day tomorrow and then 3 in Florida against the second place Rays. A series win would be a good thing.
