13 Years Ago Today

Roy Halladay won his 100th game. It was his 200th start for the Blue Jays.

It was a 2-0 win over the White Sox. Doc went 7 innings, allowed 6 hits, no walks with 7 strikeouts. Casey Jansen pitched the 8th and Jeremy Accardo got the save pitching the ninth. Accardo had 30 saves that season. He never had more than 4 in any other season.

Mark Buehrle started for the White Sox, throwing a complete game 2 hitter, both solo home runs (Aaron Hill and Frank Thomas took him deep). I wonder how many times in MLB history a pitcher threw a 2-hitter and both hits were home runs? Buehrle was 2-2 with a 3.66 ERA after the game. He’d finish 10-9 in 30 starts.

With Buehrle and Doc pitching, it was a quick game, 1 hour 50 minutes.

Halladay threw 96 pitches in his 7 innings, 62 were strikes. The win gave him a 5-2 record with a 3.90 ERA. He would finish the season 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 31 starts with 7 complete games. . He finished 5th in Cy Young voting.

Catching Halladay was Sal Fasano. I had forgot that he was a Jay. He only played in 16 games for us that season, hitting .178/.229/.311.

The Jays were 25-28 after the win, third in the AL East, already 11.5 games back of the Red Sox. We’d finish 83-79, still in third, 13 games back of the Red Sox.
