That was massively better than yesterday’s game. No big mistakes. Rowdy Tellez forgot how many outs there were one inning but it didn’t cost us.
We did most of our scoring in the third inning:
It started out with 2 infield singles from Lourdes Gurriel and Joe Panik (both went down the line very hard, nice to see). After a Danny Jansen ground out moved up the runners, we got another infield since, from Cavan Biggio, to score the first run of the game. Lourdes made a great slide to score the run. A really nice run, considering none of the hits were on hard hit balls. We deserve some luck.
Then we had a hard hit ball, Randal Grichuk homered. His at bats have been great, this past week or so. We did get a couple more hits but that’s where the scoring ended.
We got 1 more in the seventh. With two out, Jansen walked, Biggio singled and Randal Grichuk singled to pick up his fourth RBI of the game.
And 2 more in the ninth. Joe Panik walked and Biggio homered.
We had 9 hits on the day. Biggio had three. Grichuk had two. The Jays to go 0 for were Tellez, Guerrero (after a few good games in a row, he was a ground out hitting machine again) and Jansen (he got a walk). Joe Panik was 1 for 3 with a walk and scored 2 runs.
And we got great pitching:
- Hyun Jin Ryu threw 6 innings, allowed 4 hits, no walks, and 3 strikeouts. 1 earned. He allowed a leadoff double in the fourth and a one-out RBI single, but that was followed by a double play ball. He was in control all game. He left with 86 pitches. I would have been all for sending him out for the seventh (with a 4 run lead) and pull him if someone reached base.
- Rafael Dolis had a 3 ground out eighth inning. On the first one Travis Shaw made a nice diving stop and then threw from his knees all the way across the diamond. It wasn’t a perfect throw but pretty amazing. Rowdy Tellez made a great catch, and had some contact with the runner Renato Nunez. He stayed in the game for the inning but came out when his turn came up to bat. They haven’t said what the injury is, but I’m always worried about concussions on plays like that. Worth noting, Angel Hernandez, the first base umpire got the call wrong, but it was overturned very quickly on review.
- Anthony Bass got a fly out and two strikeouts in the eighth.
- Jacob Waguespack gave up a run in the ninth. A walk and a popup that fell just beyond SS Panik’s glove. I really thought that Gurriel should have taken charge and caught that.
I’m hoping Rowdy is ok.
We also found out that Bo Bichette has a grade one knee strain. Do kids still get to nap in grade one?
Once again there are issues with FanGraphs.
Let’s give Jays of the Day to Ryu, Grichuk, Biggio.
Maybe a Suckage for Vlad (0 for 4, 1 k, 3 ground outs).
Tomorrow it is Nate Pearson’s turn. I’m interested to see how he does after a couple of poor starts in a row. Wade LeBlanc, 1-0 with a 7.13 ERA in 3 starts goes for the Orioles.
We had 576 comments in a much more relaxed GameThread. I led us to victory.
