The thing that everyone is talking about on Twitter (well, other than Derek Fisher’s sudden inability to play defense) is Rob Manfred’s comments that this year’s expanded playoff system will continue after this year.
”an overwhelming majority” of owners had endorsed the expanded postseason even before the pandemic, and that he expects the format to stay beyond the 2020 season.
The owners like it because playoffs mean money, and rich people can never have enough money. I remember someone telling me that Trump would be a great president because he is rich and doesn’t want more money. I asked if he had ever met a rich person. You don’t become rich if you ever think you have enough money.
James G took the time to figure what seasons the Blue Jays would have made the playoffs under this system:

We had some good teams in those years, but the Yankees were playing with the game setting at Rookie. But a 3-game playoff series with Roy Halladay starting game one would be a fun thing to watch.I hate the idea. But I’m old. I like it when teams have to be the best of the best to make the playoffs. When teams below .500 can make it, I think it cheapens things. The NHL playoffs are set up so that your team has to be bad to miss the playoffs. The NFL? I never understood how their playoffs work, but then I’m not a real fan. I watch games, I don’t try to figure out who will make the playoffs. I don’t have a team, so I don’t care who makes it or not. I think trying to figure who is likely to make the playoffs would give me a headache.
If they do this, I think it will lower the level of competition. Why work hard to build a great team if an average team will get you to the playoffs.Part of the reason to get to allow more teams into the playoffs is to bring down the value of free agents, so owners get more money and keep more of it.
Baseball, I’m pretty invested in (my wife is nodding her head so hard it might come off). But yeah, I’ll still watch.I doubt the Player’s Association will go along with this plan unless the owners offer them a lot in return. Earlier arbitration and free agency? I hope it doesn’t lead to a strike.
