I am starting to wonder how to Padres are going to find playing time for all the guys they have picked up in trade.
In this one the Padres get Joe Musgrove. Going to the Pirates are OF Hudson Head, LHP Omar Cruz, LHP Joey Lucchesi, RHP David Bednar and RHP Drake Fellows.
Head was #7 on Padres.com’s top 30 prospect list. He was their third-round pick in the 2019 draft. Cruz is #17 on the list, signed out of Mexico in 2017.
Lucchesi, 27, made 30 starts for the Padres in 2019, going 10-10 with a 4.18 ERA. He only threw 5.2 innings in 2020. Bednar, 26, threw 17.1 innings of relief in the past two seasons. Fellows was a 6th round pick in 2019.
Musgrove, I’m sure you remember, was in the Jays system until we sent him to the Astros as part of the J.A. Happ trade.
In 3 seasons with the Pirates he had a 4.23 ERA in 59 games, 58 starts. He had a good 2020 season. In 8 starts, he had a 3.86 ERA and 12.5 strikeouts per 9 innings.
I had some hope that the Jays might try to trade for him.
