There are little bits of baseball news:
- Marcus Semien was voted Marvin Miller ‘Man of the Year’ by his fellow MLB players. It is for leadership that inspires others. That’s cool. Semien has also hired Scott Boras’s firm to represent him in free agent talks this winter. I’m not going to guess what that means, but he’s pretty got this one shot to make his fortune on the free agent market.
- Robbie Ray was voted AL outstanding pitcher by the same group of baseball peers.
- The Padres signed Bob Melvin to be their new manager. The rather strange part was he was the A’s manager. But the A’s are willing to cut costs anywhere, so signing a less expensive manager works for them. Melvin should work out well for the Padres.
- Rob Manfred tells us that the Tomahawk Chop is perfectly fine by him. The National Congress of American Indians, on the other hand, disagree:
Native people are not mascots, and degrading rituals like the ‘tomahawk chop’ that dehumanize and harm us have no place in American society. NCAI calls on the team to follow the example set by the Cleveland Guardians, and we call on Major League Baseball and the FOX Broadcasting Company to refrain from showing the ‘tomahawk chop’ when it is performed during the nationally televised World Series games in Atlanta.”
- PETA asks us to stop using the term ‘bullpen’ and try ‘arm barn’ instead. Ummmm no.
Tonight’s game 3 might see some rain in Atlanta. I’m going to be watching from the gym tonight. The series is tied at a game each.
