I see that Jerry Remy passed away, just a few days short of his 69th birthday. Remy’s been a broadcaster for the Red Sox for years and years. Before that, he was a second baseman for the Angels and then the Red Sox. He had a 10-year MLB career, hitting .275/.327/.328.
He’s an example of a type of player you don’t see anymore. A middle infielder who really didn’t get on base well (except in his very best years). He stole some bases early in his career but was caught at a rate that would make today’s managers put up the stop sign. And no power. He had 7 home runs career. His last home run came in his fourth season (of 10).
Back in those days, there was a lot of that type of middle infielder. A guy that didn’t do anything well enough to earn all the at-bats he got.
He made one All-Star team, hitting .278/.321/.350 that year.
But he had a personality.
