The Annual BBB Introduction Post

And I remember every town And every hotel room Every song I ever sang On a guitar out of tune

This might be my favorite post of the year, our annual introduction post. Yeah, mostly because the baseball season is soon to start, but also because it is fun to see where everyone is from and learn a little bit about the folks who come to the site.

The second title comes from a John Prine song “I Remember Everything”. We lost Prine, and far too many others, this past year. It was the last song he recorded. It really is too bad that Prine didn’t get to see the outpouring of love for his music since his passing. I related to the line about singing to a guitar out of tune.

Back when Hugo was on the site, he would use song lyrics as post titles. Often songs that only he and the songwriter had ever heard of, but it gave the site an identity. It made us stand out from all the other Blue Jays blogs out there. I loved it, and I ended up finding music to listen to.

I followed along for a while, but SEO interests ended it. Well, SEO interesting, and the fact that I would spend way too long trying to find the right lyric for the post.

Anyway, your mission, copy and paste the following questions into the comment thread and give us your answers.

Baseball Card Back Fun Fact:

Here are some of the people that keep the site running:

Name: Tom Dakers. I’ve been here since 2008. Originally I went by the screen name Rincewind, but it felt wrong to write opinions and not sign my name to them.

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Favourite Current Jay: Depends on the day. Let’s say Tim Mayza.

Favourite All-Time Jay: Again depends on the day, but today Jose Bautista.

Favourite Non-Jay: Gary Carter

Favourite Blue Jays Prospect: Patrick Murphy

Metaphysical Position on the Diamond: Second base. Don’t have the arm for short, even metaphysically.

Ballpark I’d Most Like to Visit: We had a plan to go to Kansas City last year, I’d like to get to go one day.

Favourite Baseball Movie: Bull Durham or Mr. Baseball

What have you done to stay sane in this past year: I’ve been trying to go for a walk each day. Jigsaw puzzles, I have a 2000 piece one going at the moment, I’m hoping to finish it before the Jays’ World Series parade, but the idea is to teach me patience, which I’m lacking lately. Also have been occasionally taking a drive to different small towns in Alberta (mainly those that have a craft brewery) to get away from the routine, visit shops and have lunch out.

When Not Bantering, I: Cease to exist.

On Twitter I am: @bluebirdbanter

Baseball Card Back Fun Fact: Once road an elevator with BB King. And I appeared on stage with the Alberta Ballet.

Name: Kate

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Favourite Current Jay: George Springer

Favourite Non-Jay: Andrew McCutchen

Favourite Blue Jays Prospect: Alejandro Kirk

Metaphysical Position on the Diamond: COVID compliance officer

Ballpark I’d Most Like to Visit: PNC Park

Favourite Baseball Movie: Moneyball

What have you done to stay sane in this past year: Ran at the beach, bought a tortoise, and did many, many puzzles.

When Not Bantering, I: used to help make reality tv shows but now I watch set feeds from home

On Twitter I am: @OhKStan

Baseball Card Back Fun Fact: I finally got my green card in September of 2020, one incredibly good thing to happen during such a horrible year.

Name: Erik

Location: Saskatoon

Favourite Current Jay: Jansen

Favourite All-Time Jay: Halladay

Favourite Non-Jay: Lindor

Favourite Blue Jays Prospect: King Kloff

Metaphysical Position on the Diamond: I always just say pitcher, but I don’t really know what this is actually asking. Maybe I’m like Bauer in that I don’t care and just throw stickem out there to get my work in? Maybe just put pitcher Tom.

Ballpark I’d Most Like to Visit: PNC or whatever the Pittsburgh one is called now.

Favourite Baseball Movie: Major League

What have you done to stay sane in this past year: lol. Oh, uhh, video games?

When Not Bantering, I: work, golf (ball or disc) or play video games

On Twitter I am: @Erik_G_T and generally uninteresting.

Baseball Card Back Fun Fact: I can drink a litre of water in 7 seconds.

Editor note: Video proof

Name: Leo / Minor Leaguer

Location: WFH in Toronto

Favourite Current Jay: Alejandro Kirk

Favourite All-Time Jay: Roy Halladay

Favourite Non-Jay: Myself (Tom: I’m hurt, last year it was me)

Favourite Blue Jays Prospect: Alek Manoah

Metaphysical Position on the Diamond: Mascot that always loses mascot races

Ballpark I’d Most Like to Visit: After 2020? Any.

Favourite Baseball Movie: Angels in the Outfield

What have you done to stay sane in this past year: I started traveling virtually: exploring Google Maps, playing Microsoft Flight Simulator, watching travel shows

When Not Bantering, I: Send emails and have Zoom meetings

On Twitter I am: @Minor_Leaguer

Baseball Card Back Fun Fact: It has been over a year since I last dropped my phone down waterfalls.

Name: Matt W

Location: GTA

Favourite Current Jay: I try to avoid getting attached to individual players. But I’d really like Cavan Biggio at the top of the lineup for the next decade. The best part is really having a half dozen great options from which to choose.

Favourite All-Time Jay: Doc, of course

Favourite Non-Jay: Tucupita Marcano, son of Tucupita Marcano from Tucupita, Venezuela. If not for his unfortunate association with the Rays, I would consider Wander Franco, son and brother and brother of Wanders Franco (and nephew of Aybars Willy and Erick).

Favourite Blue Jays Prospect: Alejandro Kirk, though this is an impossibly unfair question to ask me.

Metaphysical Position on the Diamond: Catcher

Ballpark I’d Most Like to Visit: Like that matters for the foreseeable future

Favourite Baseball Movie: Trouble with the Curve

What have you done to stay sane this past year: Started watching the various Bakeoff incarnations. I’ve decided Hell is discovering thing like Battenburg cakes and the like six weeks before being diagnosed with diabetes

When Not Bantering, I: am trying to finish compiling every transaction in Blue Jays history.

On Twitter I am: of equal status as the 45th President of the United States. (Tom: Banned for constant lying?)

Baseball Card Back Fun Fact: I’m terrible with names...just ask Kate.
