Blue Jays 1 Rangers 2
Where has all the offense gone. Jays are now 3-3. No reason to panic, but some hitting would be nice. Maybe getting back to Dunedin will help.
The good stuff?
Hyun Jin Ryu was terrific. He had a little trouble in the second inning. Gave up a leadoff home run to Nick Solak (one of the very very few hard hit balls off him all game). Then a one-out infield single, a play Vlad likely should have made. Tried to make the catch from Marcus Semien just as it bounce, making it a tough play, but it seemed he could have reached out a bit and caught it in the air. Called a hit, could have been an error on the throw or on Vlad catch attempt. An out later, Leody Taveras had a broken bat single. Big time broken bat, but the ball just landed in behind the infielders. Next batter got a pitch off the end of the bat, another soft hit single, scoring a run.
In all Ryu went 7 allowing 7 hits, 2 earned (1 shouldn’t have been earned), no walks, 7 strikeouts. He was great.
On offense we didn’t do enough again. 9 hits, 1 walk. The run came on a Semien home run.
We had chances. After Semien’s home run in the eighth, Bo Bichette got a soft hit single, but Teoscar Hernandez struck out and Vlad got to a 3-0 count but poped out.
In the fifth we had 3 on and one out, Panik singled, Danny Jansen doubled and Semien walked. Bases load, Cavan Biggio up and hit the first pitch pretty hard up the middle, but into a double play. A fly ball would have been nice.
In the ninth, Panik got on, but Rowdy Tellez, pinch hitting struck out.
Semien, Guerrero, and Panik had 2 hits each. But Hernandez (0 for 4, 3 strikeouts), Lourdes Gurriel (0 for 4, 2 strikeouts), and Randal Grichuk (0 for 4, 2 strikes) had the 0 fors.
We were 0 for 4 with RISP.
They had real trouble against Kyle Gibson. He went 6 innings, gave up 6 hits and a walk, with 8 strikeouts.
Mentioned Vlad’s bad play, should mention his good. Two on, a bunt, Vlad charges in, makes an excellent throw to third. Umpire called him safe but it was overturned. Likely was out by an inch or less, but he was out. I thought the play at first was going to be very close. Vlad made the play as well as it could have been made.
Jays of the Day: Ryu (.133 WPA) and Semien (.129).
Suckage: Biggio (-.245), Grichuk (-.171), Gurriel (-.168), Hernandez (-.155) and Rowdy (-.092, all on the strikeout to end the game).
Tomorrow the home opener from Dunedin. A 7:00 Eastern start. We have Ross Stripling going against Griffin Canning.
