Blue Jays 1 A’s 4
The game was lost on one bad inning for Anthony Kay and, yet again, a lack of hitting.
The A’s got their 4 runs and 4 of their 6 hits in the second inning. The second inning started off with back-to-back singles from Sean Murphy and Matt Chapman, a two-run double from Jed Lowrie and a Mitch Moreland home run, one of those that I didn’t think was a home run off the bat but he just sliced it over the wall in the left-field corner.
That was all the hits off Kay, but it was enough. In all Kay went 4 innings, allowed those 4 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks (one in that fourth inning), and 4 strikeouts.
Trent Thornton threw 2.2 scoreless innings, and Charlie took him out with 2 outs in the seventh, because Rogers needed to show us the Noom ad one more time.
Ty Tice got the last four outs.
On offense, we did next to nothing against Cole Irwin. He threw 8 innings, allowed just 3 hits, 1 earned, 1 walk with 9 strikeouts. He was helped out a couple of times by a wide strikeout zone, but for the most part, he was full value for a great job.
Yusmeiro Petit pitched the ninth and we didn’t have any more luck against him.
Marcus Semien, Cavan Biggio, and Santiago Espinal had a hit each, Semien had a double, the only extra-base hit.
About the only good part of that game was that Dan and Pat didn’t talk about Star Wars all the way through it. I watched a few moments of the Astros/Yankees game. The broadcast team didn’t notice the game, so busy talking about Star Wars.
No Jays of the Day today.
Suckage: Kay (-.253 WPA, if you are going to give up just four hits, don’t have them come all in a row). And let's give one to all the batters.
We have another late-night game tomorrow. Hopefully, the bats stay up late too, this time.
We had 386 comments in the GameThread. I led us to a bitter defeat.
