Jays lose to White Sox

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at Chicago White Sox David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Blue Jays 2 White Sox 5

It was a game where one mistake was enough to pretty much cost us the game.

With one out in the first, Yermin Mercedes hit a ball deep to left. The good news was that Lourdes Gurriel was playing deep in left field. The bad news? Well, Lourdes isn’t good at going back on a ball. Even if he starts on the edge of the warning track, he can’t seem to figure how to go back to the wall and make a catch. Lourdes managed to play what should have been an out, into a double. But we can’t call it an error because he misplayed it so badly.

Next batter lines out, which would have had Hyun Jin Ryu out of the inning. Instead, it was just the second out. A Jose Abreu double and a Yasmani Grandal homer put us down 3-0.

Now, Ryu game up three hard-hit balls, so he wasn’t blameless but, we should be making the easy plays.

Ryu ended up going 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 ‘earned’ 1 walk with 3 strikeouts. It wasn’t the sharpest that we’ve seen him, but he deserved better.

Anthony Castro gave up a solo homer in the seventh.

And Joel Payamps gave up a run in the eighth. A lead-off walk to Tim Anderson and a two-out double by Jose Abreu.

We didn’t do all that much on offense.

We got a run in the fifth: Joe Panik had a one-out single. After a line out from Riley Adams (a very well-hit ball to the opposite field) and then back-to-back singles from Santigo Espinal and Marcus Semien.

And a run in the sixth: Vladimir Guerrero led off with a single. After a Teoscar strikeout, Randal Grichuk hit a tailor-made double-play ball to Abreu at third base, but Abreu apparently has a religious objection to taking two outs on one ground ball and just took the out at first. I don’t know that I’ve seen that before, Abreu obviously didn’t know how many were out. Vlad took third on a pitch in the dirt that didn't get far from the catcher and scored on a Gurriel single.

We only had hits. Two from Espinal and Panik. Bo, Randal, and Adams all had 0 fors.

Had Gurriel made that catch, or if we could have had some offense,....oh well. The White Sox have a good pitching staff, if not good infield defense. All in all, I should have stayed at the bar.

I hate when we lose when Ryu starts.

The bottom of the lineup did the most with their at bats. The top of the order went 2 for 12, as did the middle of the order. The 7 to 9 spots went 4 for 10 and had both our walks. The big bats are going to have to figure a way to hit guys like Dallas Keuchel.

Jay of the Day: Well there wasn’t any. Espinal had the number until the strikeout to end the game.

Suckage: Bo (-.119), Adams (-.113), and Semien (-.096). Lets give a dishonorable mention to Gurriel for the misplay in the first.

Tomorrow we head to Boston for four games.
