Baby Jays Recap - George Springer starts his Rehab

Buffalo (18-17) - Win 14-1 over Rochester

The big news for Jays fans was George Springer getting into his first rehab game with Buffalo. Turns out he was the only starter who didn’t get in on the drubbing of Rochester. The Herd had 7 HR’s on the night, led by Richard Urena (4) & Kevin Smith (9) who both hit 2. Urena had a 3-run shot in the 2nd & a 2-run HR in the 5th. Smith has tied Samad Taylor for the Baby Jays lead, with a solo shot in the 3rd and a 2-run bomb in the 5th. Urena finished with 2 runs and 5 RBI, while Smith had 4 RBI, a single, a walk and scored 3 times.

Cullen Large had a solo HR in the 4th, and added a single and a walk. Jared Hoying continued to show he can destroy AAA pitching when he makes contact, as he had 2 doubles and his 3rd HR with Buffalo. Hoying added a single on the night as well. Logan Warmoth was the 5th HR hitter on the night, as he added his 4th in the 9th inning, after a single earlier. Christian Colon had 3 hits, including a double. Tyler White & Juan Graterol each singled. Springer ended up 0-4 on the night. His at-bats were a groundout to 3rd, a groundout to the pitcher, a line out to short and a fly out to CF.

On the mound Jacob Waguespack started and went 5.2 innings. Wags allowed 1 earned on 7 hits and a walk, while striking out 5. Casey Lawrence had 1.1 innings of relief, striking out all 4 batters. Dany Jimenez & Bryan Baker finished the game up with an inning of scoreless relief, allowing a walk each.

New Hampshire (14-21) - Postponed after the top of 1

The biggest disappointment for me last night was the NH game being rained out after the top of 1. It means that Simeon Woods Richardson was only able to get 1 inning in, and now won’t be able to pitch until likely the finale of the series on Sunday. On top of that, SWR had a pretty dominant first inning, striking out all 3 batters on 16 pitches. SWR threw 13 strikes and only 3 balls. SWR did give up 8 foul balls, but got each of the hitters swinging.

MLB’s pipeline suggested yesterday that Woods Richardson could be in for a move to Buffalo, which wouldn’t be the worst thing for his development, though as long as he’s getting regular starts, he should be just fine.

Vancouver (21-16) - Loss 16-9 to Everett

Sean Wymer started this one, and was beat up in the 2nd inning. After a quick first inning, Wymer failed to record an out in the 2nd, as the inning went HR, walk, single, HR, single, single, triple. Final line for Wymer was 6 hits and 2 walks allowed in an inning of work. Willy Gaston got the unenviable task of coming in early, and struggled. Gaston allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings. Marcus Reyes pitched 3 innings of relief, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, while striking out 3. Justin Maese pitched 2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.

At the dish, Vancouver showed some life in the 6th, as they cut a 12-0 lead to 12-7. In the inning, Vancouver had 2 walks, 3 singles, 2 doubles and took advantage of 2 errors to pile up their 7 run inning, but it wasn’t enough to get all the way back. Cameron Eden (3) & Ronny Brito (3) both hit solo HR’s late in the game. Eden added a double and drove in 2. Brito added a single and 2 walks, driving in 2 and scoring 2. Ryan Gold had a 2-run double. Luis De Los Santos had a double. Tanner Kirwer & Phil Clarke each had 2 singles. Spencer Horwitz had a single and a walk. Tanner Morris went 0-1 in the game, with 4 walks.

It is worth noting that this was a sloppy game, as each team made 4 errors. Brito had one on a throw from 3rd. Kirwer had his 3rd error on a throw from RF. De Los Santos had his 4th on a throw from SS, while Clarke had his 2nd error on a throw from behind the plate.

Dunedin (14-22) - Loss 9-7 to Clearwater

Trent Palmer started for Dunedin and didn’t have a successful outing. Palmer was charged with 5 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits and 3 walks in just 1.2 innings. Palmer gave up 2 singles and 2 doubles. Palmer did record 2 strike outs but also hurt himself with a throwing error. Sean Mellen came in and threw 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out 1. Jol Concepcion was next, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 2.2 innings. Concepcion recorded 4 K’s. Julian Valdez threw 2 innings of relief, allowing a run on 4 hits, striking out 3. Gabriel Ponce pitched the final 1.1 innings, getting a strike out.

On offense, the D-Jays had 4 HR’s in this one. Harrison Ray picked up his first 2 professional HR’s as he had solo shots in the 2nd & 6th innings. Ray also added a walk. Jhon Solarte had a solo HR (3) in the 4th. Zac Cook hit a 2-run HR (2) in the 6th. Cook added a walk and scored 2 runs. Leo Jimenez doubled and was hit by a pitch. Unfortunately Jimenez came out of the game after being hit. Zach Britton returned to the lineup and had a single and a walk. Miguel Hiraldo had a single while Orelvis Martinez, Addison Barger and Ryan Sloniger each had a walk.

Today’s Probables

Buffalo sends Nate Pearson (1-2, 5.30 ERA, 3.36 FIP, 3.42 xFIP) to the mound today against old friend Sean Nolin of the Rochester Red Wings

New Hampshire will play two today, finishing yesterday’s game, which only lasted half an inning, and then taking on Hartford in a 7-inning game. Not sure what will happen with game 1’s pitching, but Troy Miller (1-1, 6.00 ERA, 6.30 FIP, 6.59 xFIP in AA this year) gets game 2 at this point

Vancouver looks to get back into the win column against Everett. CJ Van Eyk (1-1, 4.97 ERA, 4.04 FIP, 4.53 xFIP) takes the ball

Dunedin takes on Clearwater. No pitcher has been announced to this point.
