Jays lose to Angels

It wasn’t Jose Berrios’ day. He fought through 4.1 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 walks, and was lucky to only have allowed 6 earned.

Jose loaded the bases, with one out, in the first and got out of it without a run-scoring. But he wasn’t as lucky in the second. The inning went: Walk, double, sac fly, walk, walk, single (two runs score), single (another run scores), and, finally double play. He gave up another run in the third and one more in the fifth (which scored after he left the game).

He battled and got us some innings, even having a clean inning in the third.

Trent Thornton got the last two outs of the 5th but gave up a single that scored his inherited run.

Kirby Sneak got five outs, giving up a hit and walk.

Conner Overton got his first MLB appearance, getting the third out of the seventh. He pitched a clean eighth.

We didn’t do enough on offense. The Jays had only four hits on the night, Vlad, Teoscar, Randal, and Lourdes (a home run in the ninth). It seemed like a snake bit night. We had 12 balls hit at 95 MPH or more (while the Angels had 10). We just hit them into glove.

Shohei Ohtani didn’t look particularly sharp, but he got the outs. He went 6 innings, allowed 3 hits, 3 walks, with 6 strikeouts. But then we had no luck at all with Angels relievers Austin Warren and Raisel Iglesias.

So a split against the Angels. We would have liked better, but these west coast trips never seem to go as well as we would like. So it is off to Seattle tomorrow. And it might be the first trip to Seattle in many years where the Jays aren’t the ‘home’ team. It is tougher for us in the west to get to Seattle this year.

Corey Dickerson came out of the game with back tightness, I hope it doesn’t linger. They are flying to Seattle, flights can be tough on backs.

Suckage: Berrios (-.269 WPA). Springer got the low mark among the hitters at -.077, going 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts. He didn’t appreciate the strike zone tonight, though I think Grichuk had the biggest reason to complain in the ninth inning.

Vlad had a single and a walk, but he had a rough night on defense. He missed an over the shoulder catch in the first inning (though those are very tough), he went after a ball he shouldn’t have, hit right at Breyvic Valera at second, who was more likely to have a play if Vlad had stayed at first, and, though it wasn’t called, he obstructed a runner who was in a rundown.
