This isn’t something I expected, the Blue Jays traded John Axford to the Brewers for ‘cash consideration’.
Axford had been pitching for the Bisons and he was doing great. He had a 0.77 ERA in 11.2 innings. He allowed just 3 hits, 3 walks with 15 strikeouts. I was kind of expecting him to be called up.
But then we traded for half a dozen relievers and there really wasn’t room. Adding in that they would have had to drop one more player from the 40-man roster, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I’d imagine they had some sort of deal with Axford to add him to the roster by some date.
Axford joins a dozen or so other former Jays in Milwaukee, including Rowdy Tellez, who is hitting .326/.407/.630 in 18 games for the Brewers. Great to see. I hope things work out for Axford too.
Since Axford wasn't on the 40-man, he could be traded after the deadline.
