Monday Bantering: Jays Bits

MLB: Cleveland Guardians at Toronto Blue Jays Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

I picked a good weekend to be away. Six straight losses. But then, I spent my weekend bike riding. It went well; I raised over $3000 for the MS Society of Canada (thank you to those who donated). And I rode well, surprisingly well, since I hadn’t been riding enough this spring. It was a beautiful weekend, thankfully not too much wind, sunny and warm. The last few Kilometers were a slog each day, but I made it to the finish line. I made it up each hill, never once having to get off and push my bike.

And I signed up for next year, which I think will be my ninth. So, save up some dollars to donate next year.

Anyway, we've had six straight losses. Kevin Gausman said the pitching had to be perfect to win, and it wasn’t. The team ERA was 5.65. Our starters threw only 24 innings, averaging 4 innings per game. And, obviously, the bullpen was overworked.

And our offense averaged 3 runs a game. They scored 3 runs in 4 of the games.

On the plus side, not much:

  • Vlad hit two home runs.
  • Spencer Horwitz continues to hit, and had 2 home runs yesterday, .429/.579/.929 for the week.
  • Justin Turner had been terrific, .467/.619/.733 with a home run.
  • Isiak Finer-Falefa .381/.417/.667 with two home runs.
  • Davis Schneider hit 2 home runs. It comes with a .286 OBP, but I’ll take the home runs.

Beyond that, it isn’t pretty:

  • Danny Jansen hit .063/.118/.063, while the articles about how he’s become a great offensive catcher keep coming out.
  • Kevin Kiermaier continues to show why no other team made him an offer, .077/.143/.220.
  • George Springer keeps me wondering why he hasn’t been released yet .182/.238/.238. I know, the money.
  • Daulton Varsho hit .053/.143/.053. He is a streak hitter.
  • Alejandro Kirk was 0 for 6 with 2 walks.

And Orelvis Martinez gets suspended for PEDs.

That’s the cherry on the cake.

I never believe when a player makes an excuse for his test returning positive. I didn’t believe Chris Colabello. I don’t believe Orelvis.

If we weren’t before, this six-game losing streak puts us firmly into next year's territory. There is really no excuse for playing Springer anymore. It doesn’t matter if he finds his stroke anymore; let's play the young guys.

Let’s be open to business. If any team wants to buy, we should listen.
